Hubby is trying to change the water pump on our GMC Jimmy. He cannot get the fan off to access the water pump. What is the trick here? I'm not sure what you mean you think the pump went out. Did it or didn't it. Have you looked at the pump. Does the filter need cleaning. Does it have a filter? For now I'd try to remove some of the water and replace it with new water. If the timing belt and belt tensioner pulley was replaced also, that's the going rate for the job. You have an interference engine and a timing belt driven water pump, so I'm sure they changed the timing belt and if they did a good job, you got billed reasonably. i have fan blades loose I have 3 of4 water pump bolts loose. I need to remove fan hub before I go on. also I need to place fan on new water pump. have worked on many cars but this is first Lincoln. also antilock brake motor is running constantly and brakes are VERY touchy. right now I have the battery cables off.

If it is screwed on then there will be a big hex nut at the back of the hub to put a wrench on to unscrew it from the water pump. This will also be a left hand thread so turn in the opposite direction to loosen.
