Mine is strictly gravity. I cut into (with a tee fitting) the present hot water feed line at a point which was farthest from the water heater and then bring a new line back to and teed into the drain at the very bottom of the heater. I put a shut off valve in the line just %26quot;up%26quot; from the new tee near the drain so it can be adjusted or shut off if needed. (Mine is open and has been since I installed it) Some systems may require a check valve in the new return line on the horizontal part of the return line near the water heater. I put one in but it wouldn't allow my system to work so I removed it and all is well now. All you are doing is making a loop so the hot water is always circulating from the heater thru the feed lines and when it cools a bit it returns by gravity to the tank. If you do have a loop system, the pump is usually installed at the bottom of your water heater in place of the boiler drain, pumping into the water heater. Very Important is to also have an expansion tank installed, in case there is a pressure build up in your line. Best thing is to have a plumber properly install this setup.

A company called GRUNDFOS has created a circulating pump that attaches onto the hot/ outlet side of your water heater. You can't do this unless you want to kill it. Must keep these engines topped up with coolant and out of the red or we blow head gaskets and it becomes more expensive to fix than the ride is worth.



Sounds like it's time to man up with the $ and put a pump or hose in it. Pump is driving by the timing belt if i recall correctly.... which means put a timing belt and balance shaft belt in it while you are in there. These aren't hard to do and they are even easier to screw up. If you have the timing only two teeth off you will bend valves when you turn it over so you need to be exact and correct the first time. I highly recommend using some sort of diagram. I still do after doing them for twelve years and it helps big time. Also there are plated links on the chain that should aid in the timing alignment. A suction pump basically %26quot;sucks%26quot; water up. This might be a piston pump, or a venturi pump (or some other types). This type of pump raises water up by lowering the air pressure above the water, and letting atmospheric pressure push the water up the tube. Suction pumps can't pull water up more than about 32 feet (because that's how high atmospheric pressure can lift a column of water) but they have the advantage that the pump can be located at the top of where you want the water (rather than down where tie water is).



A %26quot;Lift pump%26quot; basically uses mechanical force to raise water upwards. This could be a chain of buckets, or an Archimedes screw, or a %26quot;bubble-lift%26quot; pump.
