How to diagnose a water pump problem?

car smelled like its riunning hot all the time, water leaks, have to place water in coolant tank every day. new thermstat, slow take offs and making grinding noises while pressing gas pedal. How to diagnose a water pump problem?First find your leak. Generally if all your gaskets and hose connections are ok, the only place left on the waterpump itself to lose water is through the bearing behind the fan pulley. If that's the case then a new/changeover waterpump is needed. I don't know of any these days that have rebuild kits. If you're having a go at this yourself, when you take the belt, fan and pulley off, turn the waterpump by hand and feel for any uneveness, (small bumpiness) It should turn perfectly freely and completely smooth. If you feel there is the smallest catch of resistance, get another one.

Post another question with the make, model and engine type. Readers may be prompted by there own experiences with that make. How to diagnose a water pump problem?yep, those are good indications the water pump is bad. if its leaking water, then its probably leaking out the weep hole under the pump. How to diagnose a water pump problem?your water pump is bad
