How do you know if your water pump is failing?

I'm leaking coolant and I cant see where it is coming from. Its only when the car is running. My serpentine belt is sqealing also. What could cause this? It all happened around the same time. I'm not sure what it is cause I can't see it, but i think it is the water pump. could you tell me some symptoms of a failing water pump?

Also the car stays cool, its not overheating one bit, but I have to fill the coolant with like 1/2 gallon of coolant every two days. How do you know if your water pump is failing?Your car has the early symptoms of a water pump that is going out. It is the %26quot;bearings%26quot; that is slowly going out. It may not heat up right now but it probably will soon. Get it checked by a professional! How do you know if your water pump is failing?Sounds like a leaky radiatorHow do you know if your water pump is failing? It sure sounds like the water pump. Thats the same synptoms I had 2 years ago, when I had to replace the water pump on my van.. You might as well spend the money on one now, or you'll be a slave to buying and pouring coolant forever. You can get a good used one at a salvage yard for a reasonable price. Avoid a major dealers parts dept at all costs. They will rape you.How do you know if your water pump is failing?Your description is that of a failing water pump. Grasp the fan impeller housing and move it horizontally and vertically. If you can move it more than 1/4%26quot; then it is water pump time. Get a rebuilt one at a parts store or if you prefer quality get a new one from the dealership. You pay a little more but you get the best quality. Avoid the suggestion of using used parts. You will just be doing the job over very soon. How do you know if your water pump is failing? In in my experience, waterpump's failure is leaking (before it stops working as a pump), so that might be why. And since the water pump may be turned by your serpentine belt then maybe the belt is getting wet and squeeling (or maybe you just need a new belt for that old beater you have there, besides a water pump). Sometimes water pumps are not visible because they are driven by the timing belt (like in a 3.0 Chry/Dodge Engine in a minivan). But I suppose the water could be leaking under that and eventually coming out on your belt. If the water pump is being powered by the timing belt there should be an inspection cover somewhere you can remove to look down in there. How do you know if your water pump is failing?those are the symptoms you better go have your car checked before you mess up the engine and then it's really going to cost youHow do you know if your water pump is failing?Leaky radiator or hose. How do you know if your water pump is failing?yes sir the squealing your hearing is the bearings in the pump going bad.if its more of a puddle in the morn or whatever time it sits the longest, its your pump. when the engine is at its coolest everything expands, hence leakage. also, the more i think, the squealing cud be just a loose belt or an a/c clutch fan going bad too.How do you know if your water pump is failing? Some other things to look for or check, does the pump make noise at all, pull or move the hose around and watch for the coolant to increase in what leaks then it might be the hose at the clamp connection. now if you need to replace it you never want to buy a salvage yard pump, you can get a rebuilt one or brand new one for a fair price, i would guess at about 30 to 50 dollars and a core charge, to make this repair you will need to take the front of the engine apart up to and including the alternater, a/c compressor, power steering pump ect. some or all of these components may have to be removed, there are also some procedures and precautions that you will need to be aware of to ensure a proper installation, function, and not have any leaks. if you are new to auto repairs i would let someone with experience do the job or take it to your mechanic to make the repair. good luck!!How do you know if your water pump is failing?Park the car on a clean surface, open the hood, start the engine and then watch for leaks. Most water pumps have a weep hole at the bottom, coolent could be getting on the belt making it slip a squeal. If you can't see get a flashlight and look. Sometimes when a water pump goes bad, the bearing will fail and make noise the shaft will be loose. Or you can take your car and have the cooling system pressure checked, and the leak will show up.
