How much should I pay to have a water pump replaced?

water is leaking from my car, i took it in right now and they say its the water pump that's broken, so they said it'll be 60 dollars for the cost of the water pump, AND $240 more for the labor of having to put it in, ive never had this done before so does anyone know if that's a decent price? Should i be paying more, or less? How much should I pay to have a water pump replaced? That actually isnt too bad. It typically can depend on the brand and how easy the labor is.. I have a 1987 VW Golf and they charged me around 450 to install a new one. But if in doubt, shop around a little. How much should I pay to have a water pump replaced?Sounds about right....

On some vehicles replacing a water pump can require alot of work. How much should I pay to have a water pump replaced? You can buy the water pump and install it yourself. You can probably get one for less than $60 if you shop around.

Check the car over yourself or get a 2nd opinion, it could be a leaking hose which will cost a lot less to replace than the water pump.

On the other hand it could be a leaky radiator. This will cost you more, but left unattended it will cost you even more. How much should I pay to have a water pump replaced?get a mechanic friend to help, (wiki answer below)

Remove fan shroud, fan, and belts. Get a 15/16 socket and remove the nut that holds the crankshaft pulley on and remove the pulley. You really need to get a Haynes or Chilton manual because this part has to be done right or you are letting yourself in for all kinds of trouble. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers and make a diagram of where the bolts go, as they are not all the same. You MUST align the marks on both the camshaft pulleys with the little dots on the timing belt covers.(at 3 o'clock)This should align the key on the camshaft pulley with the hash mark on the inside cover(at 3 o'clock also). Remove the two bolts holding the hydraulic belt tensioner in and remove it. You will need to compress it in a vise and put a nail thru the holes in it to be able to reinstall it. Then slip the timing belt off. Be SURE you DO NOT move the pulleys out of alignment. The water pump is in the top center of the block, has 11 or 12 bolts in it. Remove it, clean the gasket area and replace it. And then reassemble. It is not easy, and I had a Haynes manual to help me.
