How can I fix my timing that i must have messed up while changing my water pump?

I changed my water pump on my 1996 Chrysler concord had to take the belt off to do it. must have messed up the timing...PLEASE HELP!!!!! Thanks..How can I fix my timing that i must have messed up while changing my water pump?Did you set the engine to TDC before taking the belt out?

If engine is aligned to TDC, you just have to reinstall the belt. If you did not set to TDC before taking out, then you are screwed- tow your car to a mechanic.



Here is what mechanic has to do. Take all spark plugs out, place a socket over the crankshaft and turn the cam and crank independently to set it to TDC mark. During the turning process, the valve may contact piston. By hand turning, you can feel this condition and adjust the cam to work around this problem. After setting the engine to TDC, then install the timing belt and retest.How can I fix my timing that i must have messed up while changing my water pump?You need to find a timing belt diagram. It will be in a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your car. While you are doing this you might as well replace the belt.

Probably the usual.. get the #1 piston to TDC on a compression stroke and then line up the cam / crank marks. I am total confused.How can I fix my timing that i must have messed up while changing my water pump?tear it back down bring it to tdc. no1 were the marks line up to see wich one is off and if you did not loosen the cam gear bolts. reset the timing as follows with the marks on the cams lined up between the two dots on the case and the crank one tooth off to your left as you face the motor install the belt from the crank to drivers side cam note probabaly wont stay tightthat is ok now using asmall clamp hold the belt to the cam and run it under the water pump and over the pass. side cam keep ing belt tight between cams clamp belt to cam gear and install over tensioner pulley pull up on belt near tensioner as you roll crank back to mark this picks up the slack and sets it right hold tension on belt with tensioner pulley while installing hydralic tensioner cylender.How can I fix my timing that i must have messed up while changing my water pump?Wow, you do have a problem, I need to know what size the engine is to help you though, I done one yesterday myself, they are a pain in the A#%. you set the timing for TDC on the Exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke.

( or who knows)



put crank at TDC ( for number #1 cylinder.)

what is says in manual, I have car here, that's #4 .

then the cams must be set to the correct TDC position.

install the tbelt.



now crank engine over (plugs out)( with wrench )

and watch the action of #1 cylinder piston and the action of the cams. TDC , CW rotation from front, Intake valve opens , then close, then compression, TDC and then power stroke both valves must be close , then pistion rising and exhaust valve opens and ends at TDC exh. done.

( you just validated proper action of #1 cylinder and cam)



if that looks good,double check exact tooth counts and timing marks one more time on the Cam sprockets.

per the manual instructions this engine.

follow any belt pretensioning rules per manual.



if all that is good,

button up.



measure twice , then cut ,as carpenters say.
