How can I tell if the water pump is working?

My jeep (straight-6 motor) recently overheated. I am trying to figure out why. The top radiator hose feels like there is no pressure but there is a steady flow of coolant in and out of the coolant tank. Dose that flow mean the water pump is working? Also if the raidator were cloged would the coolant flow in and out of coolant tank?

thanksHow can I tell if the water pump is working? If your radiator cap is kind of old, replace it.

They're like $10.

Those six cylinder engines are pretty reliable. You may want to replace the thermostat too. $18. and change the coolant also.

If after doing that, which would be done anyway if you brought it to a shop for $400 service. If it continues to over heat, then you may have a blown head gasket. How can I tell if the water pump is working? If your upper radiator hose has no pressure or goes flat on you then you need to replace the radiator cap. A bad radiator keep will cause overheating as well. How can I tell if the water pump is working?take the cap off the radiator when it,s cold, start it up and see if it,s circulating. if it is then the pump is working.another way you can tell is see if your getting heat from the heater. if you are then the pump is circulating the anti-freeze back into the heater core.
